Editorial Motherhood : Maternity

featured baby, featured maternity, Maternity & Newborn

Ok, so I have lots of new motherhood work to post and I’m so excited. I am all about collaborating with moms who love fashion! For this session we were inspired by lingerie and editorial style images (sigh, I love). I want my sessions to look romantic, lost in thought about their little ones, and focused on beauty. It’s so moving for me to have the chance to empower moms to feel confident and ready to rock out the birth of their babes. I think maternity photos can really help with that. When you see yourself looking stunning and really embracing motherhood it helps you to feel like a kick ass mom! It takes a bit of the fear away and replaces it with pure beauty and joy. I just added a new pinterest hover option so if you like what you see feel free to pin away. I have always used Pinterest as a great way to collect ideas and brainstorm with clients. Its important to take your time and curate really beautiful pins to tell a story. I have a lot of new inspiration and I can’t wait to share!!

Editorial Motherhood

featured baby, featured maternity, Maternity & Newborn

When I photograph a maternity session its really important that the mom to be feels beautiful! I want maternity images to be romantic and engaging. I don’t think anyone feels great about their body while pregnant, but its my job to create a safe environment for moms to feel comfortable enough to show their bump. I never thought I would miss pregnancy but I do. I try to capture the fleeting moments to preserve for each mom.

Newborn + Postpartum Photography

Here are a few snaps of our girl at 5 weeks old. I’ve always wanted to do this kind of newborn photography, but never really had babies to “practice” with. Most moms ask for babies in baskets, “pretty shots,” and everything posed. I really wanted to do something different to share another way! I like to see the real details, to remember. One day these clothes won’t fit, she won’t be this tiny, and I may not still have these blankets. I want to be able to picture each moment as it actually was. I hope this helps some other moms see that documentary photography can be a really special way to photograph babies.

Fall Family Portraits

Family, Featured Family

Three weeks pregnant and counting I had to make time to fit in one of my fave families. It was pretty cold so we had to keep little hands and feet warm throughout with kisses, lots of swinging in the air and jumping in piles of leaves. With this group I always expect to see lots of dimples, huge laughs, and good times. Little Marlow was such a hoot wearing moms hat and snuggling close, while Axel was all about finding big sticks and digging holes. What a beautiful fall and fun way to spend some of my last days pre-baby myself. I can’t wait to continue exploring lifestyle sessions and pushing a more documentary approach with kids and families. I love real moments and just taking time to have fun! When you let kids be themselves the cutest things happen. See below 😉

Baby Bump : Maternity Photography

featured baby, Maternity & Newborn

Pregnancy. A powerful, magical time for your body to create new life. If you are the one actually experiencing it you may often feel otherwise – the nausea, exhaustion that is so intense you can barely walk across the room, and your precious body morphing into something that you hope will go as planned. For me, I’m pregnant right now and the “glow” feels more like a bus ran over me. However, every time I look in the mirror at my growing belly or feel the baby I can’t describe the happiness. Its so crazy to feel that you can love a person that you have never met. It’s so important for me to document this process (even though I don’t really feel like getting anywhere in front of a camera!) Over the next few weeks I have a few sessions that I booked for myself to make sure I can share this journey. I’m doing one at 20 weeks, and two more closer to my due date. Yes, thats lots of maternity and I think its important to share because I’ve heard so many moms recently say “maternity is just not worth it,” “I feel terrible, why would I take photos of that,” etc, etc.

In the meantime, it is very important for me to start pulling images from the archives that have never been seen. For years I’ve focused on lots of intimate work but very rarely actually share it online. If you didn’t\dont know I actually shoot a lot of  editorial maternity photography. Thank you so much to my clients that are willing to share their images with the world now, because I don’t want this kind of natural baby beauty to go hidden any longer. I absolutely LOVE this type of photography and need to start doing more of it and sharing it! If the photo above looks like your cup of tea-shoot me a message! Lets document your bump in all of its naked, beautiful glory. In my opinion clothes cover the bump soooo much and you can’t really appreciate it. Theres something so soft and special about a mama and her baby in the raw. natural. real.

Family Portrait in the Park

Family, Featured Family, Kids

The family portrait. It’s something we are all familiar with, and most do not look forward to. Visions of kids running and crying, refusing to cooperate, and lots of time spent standing around waiting for it to be over. As a photographer you don’t want this to be the common reaction (obviously). I do take pride in my ability to rock out large family groups at weddings in no time and keep everyone happy. It took lots of weddings and many different routines to figure out the magic trick to families.

This has been a very busy year for me! I booked more weddings than ever, we are building a house, getting married, and opening two new businesses. I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about where I want my work to go and whats important to me, our family, and how I want to spend my time. Significance has always been a priority and something I am constantly striving for. I want to take images that matter! The closer I get to creating my own family the more I realize how important time is and how precious each moment is with your loved ones. Getting back to my roots, I love images with a film grain. I started out in a darkroom and spent time working with each image-by hand in the dark. The time consuming (and expensive) process was challenging, fun, and contributed to a lot of creativity in my work. I’m blessed that my clients are willing to take a chance and give me the freedom to create. “I trust you” is my absolute favorite thing to hear – its the creativity green light. Documenting moments is an intimate process that doesn’t come easy to everyone. It can be nerve racking, intimidating, and seem uncomfortable, which is why I recommend letting go and letting your photographer take the reigns to tell your story.

I was so happy to meet Molly and Max before their big day to catch a few photos and meet baby Jane. Their wedding at The Monastery was beautiful and ended with a bash on the dance floor. I will post sneaks soon!

Holiday Portraits : Dirr Nurseries

Family, Featured Family, Kids

Holiday portraits are such a fun way to share your childhood milestones. Yesterday we drove all the way out to Dirr Nurseries in Goshen to take a few photos among the Christmas trees. The people at Dirr are so friendly and accommodating! You can cut your own tree, and they will package it up in their sleigh, past the north pole sign, and serve you a cup of hot chocolate. I absolutely love the beautiful colors around this time of year -blues, purples, light cloudy sky. Luckily, it wasn’t too cold and we had a blast hiding and playing in the trees.Holiday portraits dirr nurseriesNorth Pole or Bermuda…you pickHoliday portraits dirr nurseries
