Editorial Motherhood : Maternity

featured baby, featured maternity, Maternity & Newborn

Ok, so I have lots of new motherhood work to post and I’m so excited. I am all about collaborating with moms who love fashion! For this session we were inspired by lingerie and editorial style images (sigh, I love). I want my sessions to look romantic, lost in thought about their little ones, and focused on beauty. It’s so moving for me to have the chance to empower moms to feel confident and ready to rock out the birth of their babes. I think maternity photos can really help with that. When you see yourself looking stunning and really embracing motherhood it helps you to feel like a kick ass mom! It takes a bit of the fear away and replaces it with pure beauty and joy. I just added a new pinterest hover option so if you like what you see feel free to pin away. I have always used Pinterest as a great way to collect ideas and brainstorm with clients. Its important to take your time and curate really beautiful pins to tell a story. I have a lot of new inspiration and I can’t wait to share!!

Hello 2019!! Welcome to Motherhood.

Personal

Hello world! It’s been almost a year since I’ve been on my website (literally since I joined the motherhood club!). I accidentally got locked out of my account and had way too much going on to figure it out. Well, I’m finally back! This is such perfect timing because I have so many new things that I want to share in 2019. A whole year of inspiration, grateful feelings, motherhood, and craziness all packed into this mama who is ready to CREATE and COLLAB!

Get excited because I have a HUGE site update that I’ve been working on behind the scenes (hence no updates here for you to see). This new addition is so exciting because I’m really passionate about it. Just to give you a little tease and let you in on the goods I’ll give you one hint as to what I’m working on – MOTHERHOOD!! Lots of brand new mamas, a site facelift, and tons of new educational content. This new year and new me will include tons of personal life sharing (you’ll start to see me cooking again and hanging with my puppy Boss and hubby Joe). I want you to get to know me on a new level which will include a lot more than just my site, but also linking more of my social media like Pinterest (not sure if you know I have an OBSESSION, and have for a long time) and insta where I share videos and talk about what I do. For me photography is so personal, and so I need you to get me.

So keep an eye out over the next few weeks as I finish up the behind the scenes stuff. My dog also just had a major surgery so I’m at home taking care of him and nursing him back to health. In the meantime make sure to follow me on Insta and check out my Pinterest to get some sneaks of what I’ve been thinking about and working on.

Thank you so much for checking out my work if this is your first time to my site, and thank you for coming back if you’ve been here before. Here’s to 2018 – you were crazy and knocked my socks off. Wow motherhood is harder than I expected. I’ll leave you with this little 2018 portrait of my family. Harper was 10 months old here. xoxo Robin

Fashion Editorial – Black and White

Fashion & Beauty

Aesthetically I have a few constants in my life – Black and White Fashion Editorial photos are one of them! There’s something about the way black and white makes me feel. It’s instantly cooler, sexier, and feels as though you’ve stopped time in some special way. You take away all of the color, and distraction and just see right into the soul of the sitter. It also takes me back to my darkroom days, spending hours and hours working on one image at a time by hand. It’s so easy to take all of that for granted now that photos are instant and you can blast out hundreds in one sitting. I really like to remember the old days, and working on each image as if it were precious. To me I still feel that way with every click. Each moment is intentional. I work with my sitter to create and capture a specific feeling. These photos were taken in my old closet and we literally threw everything in the corner of the room (yes, we are both crazy, messy and move quickly). I stood in our bathroom looking through the doorway into the closet and wanted to capture that feeling of admiring someone from afar and getting an intimate glimpse into a moment with them.

I absolutely LOVE photographing Amy because she is so open and free in front of the camera. From the tiniest movement of her hand to flipping her hair she knows how to work it. We actually both were signed by the same agency here in Cincinnati (back in the day)- Wings Models. I highly recommend them if you plan to travel for modeling. They had me signed with Ford in NYC so quickly and it was a great experience getting to see inside the fashion industry at such a young age.

Editorial Motherhood

featured baby, featured maternity, Maternity & Newborn

When I photograph a maternity session its really important that the mom to be feels beautiful! I want maternity images to be romantic and engaging. I don’t think anyone feels great about their body while pregnant, but its my job to create a safe environment for moms to feel comfortable enough to show their bump. I never thought I would miss pregnancy but I do. I try to capture the fleeting moments to preserve for each mom.

Newborn + Postpartum Photography

baby, Family, featured baby, featured maternity, Maternity & Newborn, newborn, Personal

Here are a few snaps of our girl at 5 weeks old. I’ve always wanted to do this kind of newborn photography, but never really had babies to “practice” with. Most moms ask for babies in baskets, “pretty shots,” and everything posed. I really wanted to do something different to share another way! I like to see the real details, to remember. One day these clothes won’t fit, she won’t be this tiny, and I may not still have these blankets. I want to be able to picture each moment as it actually was. I hope this helps some other moms see that documentary photography can be a really special way to photograph babies.

Cheapside Cafe

featured local stories, Personal

I realized that I don’t often post about my personal life. Having our daughter recently changed my views on so much. Its important for me to let you see behind the scenes, so to speak. To better understand me, my life, what I like, and why. So much of life inspires, and most of what inspires me comes from the everyday. I love to watch the way light washes over a room, or the small details of an object overlooked.

I went to work with my hubby at Cheapside, his cafe downtown that he owns and designed and snapped a few shots. We talk about Cheapside a lot at home and I love to listen to his ideas about how people enjoy a space, and what excites him about creating a place for people to come and hang out-to get inspired. We were actually just friends when he started Cheapside and it was so fun for me to watch the process from start to finish. There were so many inspirations for the space that came from the most unexpected places like Mario Andretti’s race shop, cool west coast style, light, and lots of minimalist touches. Over the years we’ve been lucky enough to host some amazing events at Cheapside like our engagement party and a party of note with the CSO.

When Joe originally got in the restaurant scene there weren’t many other places in Cincinnati. Now in 2019, the scene is booming and the city has grown so much! It’s exciting to see where things will go and we are happy to flow and change as the seasons pass. If you have the chance to travel to Cheapside make sure to snag a seat in the Teepee and try the famous breakfast sandwich (we’ve sold over 60,000 – pretty crazy for a sandwich). As always, I hope you enjoyed this little story and found out a bit more about me. For more behind the scenes of my everyday check out my insta stories @robinmckerrellphoto. You’ll find lots of videos of our babe and huge American bulldog Boss, me trying to ballroom dance, and other random mom outings.

Fall Trip : NYC + Rhode Island

Destination, Personal

At 9 months pregnant my husband and I decided to pack up and head to NYC for a photo workshop that I wanted to attend to learn from some of my faves. This was such an amazing get away to give us time to reconnect before the baby and to help me get inspired for this coming season. I couldn’t have planned for the spark that was ignited in me. Check out some of our snaps from Rhode Island, the city, and hanging with friends.

Fall Family Portraits

Family, Featured Family

Three weeks pregnant and counting I had to make time to fit in one of my fave families. It was pretty cold so we had to keep little hands and feet warm throughout with kisses, lots of swinging in the air and jumping in piles of leaves. With this group I always expect to see lots of dimples, huge laughs, and good times. Little Marlow was such a hoot wearing moms hat and snuggling close, while Axel was all about finding big sticks and digging holes. What a beautiful fall and fun way to spend some of my last days pre-baby myself. I can’t wait to continue exploring lifestyle sessions and pushing a more documentary approach with kids and families. I love real moments and just taking time to have fun! When you let kids be themselves the cutest things happen. See below 😉

Katie + Clark : Fall Engagement

Engagements, Featured Weddings, Weddings

These two are the perfect mix of sweetness and fun. We spent this cold and rainy day hanging out, cracking jokes, hopping puddles, and talking about their wedding. We didn’t have a planned location or any thoughts set in stone, but we went out to document THEM. I absolutely love this kind of photography because its so much more real. You can’t plan intimate moments-they just happen. This will probably be my last engagement session of the year since our baby is due soon (3 weeks and counting). Its been an amazing journey this season continuing to learn and grow as a photographer as we build our family. It makes every photo mean so much more and my time getting to know each client extremely meaningful.
